Michelle Sutherland is a theatre director and performance creator who develops highly original music theatre and opera. She is a John Wells Fellow at Carnegie Mellon University in her third year. Directing credits include Gertrude Stein SAINTS!

Michelle is based in New York where she is in the process of starting her theatre company, Theatre Plastique, and developing new work using jazz techniques such as improvisation, call and response, and jam session as the basis for exploration in the rehearsal room. Native of Phoenix, Arizona, she spent her early youth touring the US as a musician in a gypsy-jazz band.
